Ever since the first case of Ebola Bundibugyo Virus Disease was reported in Uganda, authorities have undertaken concerted efforts to control its spread.
On May 11, a sample taken from a 59-year-old Congolese national who had entered Uganda tested positive for the virus. He was admitted to Kibuli Hospital, where he later died on May 14. The following day, authorities confirmed that the cause of death was Ebola Bundibugyo Virus Disease.
Since then, the government, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners, has implemented several response measures. These include the deployment of rapid response teams, delivery of medical supplies, enhanced surveillance, laboratory testing and confirmation, infection prevention and control measures, the establishment of safe and optimized treatment centers, and community engagement initiatives.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Diana Atwine, says the situation is under control and that the reported cases are being managed effectively. In this episode of The Grind with Patrick Kamara, she explains how Uganda is working closely with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government and the WHO to establish medical camps in eastern DRC as part of efforts to tackle the spread of the disease at its source.
