Uganda marks 64 years since gaining independence on 9 October 1962. This year’s theme is: “Embracing Our Sovereignty with Hope and Visionary Leadership.”
One of the phenomenal seasoned politicians who has lived through Uganda’s independence journey is 77-year-old Hon. Wasswa Lule. An accountant by profession, Lule has served as a former Deputy Inspector General of Government and former representative for Rubaga North. The Democratic Party stalwart has remained active on the political scene, continuing to speak out on economic and political developments in the country.
Appearing on The Grind with Kamara podcast, Lule downplayed the government’s renewed stance on tackling corruption in local government administration, describing it as more of a political showbiz exercise. He said Uganda would have been in a far better position since independence if there had been greater commitment to fighting corruption. He noted that political manoeuvring and impunity have weakened efforts to address the vice.
The former first son of Uganda’s late President, Prof. Yusuf Lule, also reflected on Uganda’s historical political affairs. He recalled his time and role in the Constituent Assembly, where he actively participated in the constitution-making process.
Wasswa Lule also had strong criticism for leaders across the political divide, accusing them of being unwilling to relinquish top party positions while, at the same time, claiming to uphold the principles of good governance and democracy.
