Police cautions taxi operators against planned strike

Police has cautioned a section of taxi operators against today’s planned strike warning that they risk arrest if they disrupt business in the city.

The Traffic commander Norman Musinga says they are to beef up security within the city to ensure law and order prevails.

Musinga has directed that those planning to strike should stay home further advising them to seek redress from responsible authorities.

One of the issues raised by the drivers is that their permits have been confiscated and none of them taken road tests as directed by the president earlier, in order to be given new permits.

The Taxi drivers under their umbrella body Uganda Transport Development Agency (UTRADA) yesterday threatened they would begin a sit down strike today citing police brutality.

Led by their chairman Mustapha Mayambala, they have called on police and KCCA law enforcers to stop maltreating their members.

They accuse KCCA law enforcement officers of beating them for illegal parking yet they were cleared by President Museveni to park at any spot until traffic operations in the city are streamlined.

However, the Chairman of the Taxi Park and Stages Committee (Tapscom), a taxi group allied to Kampala Capital City Authority, says they will be working and transporting all city residents.
