An outbreak of swine fever has claimed over 50 pigs in the sub county of Labor in Serere district.

The African swine fever is a contagious viral infection that spreads rapidly in pigs.

Mr.Sam Opio, the Assistant District Veterinary Officer says the disease is passed on to animals through a vicious cycle between soft ticks and wild pigs and direct contact with infected animals.

He adds that the disease is common during the dry season and is hard to control.

Meanwhile Mr.David Oloba the Local Council One chairperson Otoba village says his people are worried because pig rearing is one of the main sources of income.

He added that this has affected the price of pork in the market, falling from Ush 8,000 to Ush 5,000.
