President Yoweri Museveni is today expected to grace the Benedicto Kiwanuka commemoration event at the judiciary’s headquarters in Kampala.

Today marks 50 years since the first Chief Justice, Benedicto Kiwanuka was killed during Idi Amin’s regime in 1972.

According to Sarah Langa, the Chief Registrar, the event will have a selected number of physical participants with a provision for all stakeholders to follow the proceedings online via zoom and on the judiciary YouTube channel.

She says the function, which will cost Shs200m will be run under the theme; “Benedicto Kiwanuka: Reflections on the independence of the judiciary in modern times”.

Langa says the theme of this year’s commemoration was carefully chosen as it highlights one of the basic tenets of the rule of law and democratic governance.

She adds that this year’s keynote address shall be delivered by Ghanaian Supreme Court Justice, Prof Emmanuel Nii Ashie Kotey.
