Thousands of pupils in primary schools in Apac and Amolatar have dropped out of school this term due to hunger as starvation reaches worrying levels in the region.
Fred Ogwang, a former LC3 councilor in Amolatar says school children in most rural areas have abandoned school to search for fish in Lake Kyoga.
According to education authorities, over 1,000 pupils did not sit end of term exams in three schools in Namasale Sub-county in Amolatar district.
Namasale Sub-county chairman, Rambo Ongu says more than 350 pupils out of the 700 enrolled at Olyaka Primary School also dropped out this term.
Awikori Primary School opened term one with 600 pupils but closed with only 290 pupils.
While at least 435 out of 625 pupils enrolled at Burakwana Primary School have abandoned school.
He says most children have resorted to fishing to feed their hungry parents.
Amolatar District Education Officer, Nelson Ecam, now plans to hold a meeting with the school managers, local councilors and members of Parent-Teacher Associations to forge away forward.
