Reformed Karimojong warriors in the Karamoja sub-region have finally begun receiving the long-awaited iron sheets, with the first distribution launched in Abim district.

In November 2023, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja flagged off the initial consignment of 97,552 iron sheets destined for 3,752 beneficiaries across all nine districts of Karamoja. These sheets serve as a token of appreciation from the government to warriors who voluntarily surrendered their arms and embraced peace.

The Office of the Prime Minister launched the distribution in Abim district on Thursday, with plans to continue rollouts in other districts. About 28 individuals in Abim town council stand to benefit in this first phase.

Abim’s Chief Administrative Officer, Mr Samuel Bigirwa, confirmed receiving 10,686 iron sheets meant for 411 households in this initial stage. The distribution commenced on Thursday and will run until Sunday, operating from designated parishes.

Bigirwa clarified that this phase distributes to seven beneficiaries per parish, while remaining warriors will have to wait for the second phase of the program.
