Rift Valley Railways has contested the actions by Uganda Revenue Authority to freeze its bank accounts over tax arrears.
Early this week, the tax body had the company’s bank accounts frozen over a Sh.9 billion tax debt accrued over the last five years.
This was confirmed by the authority’s Manager Debt Collection Unit Waiswa Abudu-Sallam.
RVR’s General Manager Mark Rumanyika tells KFM that URA rushed to take such drastic action because the company had already filed an appeal before court.
However, the URA’s Assistant Commissioner for Public and Corporate affairs Sarah Banage says they issued three notices without response prompting their action.
Late last year URA embarked on an enforcement campaign to ensure compliance and address revenue shortfalls and also be able to finance the national budget by 80 percent as stated in the 2013/2014 budget.
