The World Wide Fund has unveiled a Shs 4bn billion project to increase resilience to natural disasters in the Rwenzori region.
Kasese communities in Western Uganda face increasing danger from floods and the level of risk is more closely tied to their proximity with River Nyamwamba, which bursts its banks almost annually, displacing communities.
The WWF country director David Dduli says the 4-year project funded by the Danish Family Planning Association will help local communities recover from the effects of floods.
Duli adds that the project will focus on empowering the youth through creating jobs and restoration of the degraded and encroached areas in the Rwenzori mountain national park buffer zones to limit the occurrence of floods.
The project will cover districts of Kasese, Kabarole, Bunyangabu, Ntoroko and Bundibugyo.
