Results from the 2012 UCE exams have been released today indicating that the general performance in declined compared to 2011.
7.2% of candidates who sat the exams passed in Division one compared to 8.5% in 2011, while only 16.6% of the candidates passed in Division 2 compared to 26.8% in 2011.
English, Literature in English, Christian Religious Education and Islamic studies are the best performed subjects, while Science subjects including Physics, chemistry and biology are the worst performed subjects.
A total of 13, 353 failed exams totally and could not be graded. UNEB Secretary Mathew Bukenya has attributed the high failure rate to poor interpretation of exams and limited knowledge of English.
Failure of science subjects has been blamed on lack of practice, with poor analysis and lack of knowledge on the use of apparatus.
Meanwhile, Results of 1,127 candidates have been withheld over suspected malpractice. The affected schools include Gaba Parents Secondary School, St Michael Amuria, Kinoni S.S in Kiruhura district, Central College Nateete, St Noah Mawaggali S.S.S Jjinja and East High School Tororo, among others.
Wakiso district registered the best performance with 3931 candidates in Division One, followed by Kampala, with 2726, Mukono with 1633.
Others that performed fairy well include Mbale, Mbarara and Jinja. Katakwi and Nakapiripirit districts registered the worst performance without a single candidate in Division One while Kalangala had only 3 candidates in Division One.
At Luzira prison, of the 26 students that sat exams, 8 passed in Division One.
