As Uganda joins the world to commemorate mid- wives day, the ministry of health has revealed that Uganda is in need of 3000 midwives to cover up the gap.

Addressing journalists at the ministry of health, the State Minister for Primary health care Dr.Joyce Moriku Kaducu says due to budgetary constraints Uganda has only 8000 midwives and plans are underway to recruit more midwives.

World Health Organization recommends a midwife to attend to 175 mothers annually but in Uganda the number noted doubles for majority midwives.

Moriku says that Uganda has had tremendous reduction in maternal death from 438 per 100,000 to now 336 per 100,000 live births urging the public and expectant mothers to support the works of midwives.

The main celebrations are slated to take place tomorrow in Fort portal Kabarole district under the theme β€œmidwives, mothers and families: partners for life.
