Ebola

Uganda has sent a representative on the African Union humanitarian mission to combat the threat of Ebola on the continent.

The disaster and relief coordinator in the Office of the Prime Minister, Maj. Gen. Julius Oketta is slated to join the African Union Support to Ebola Outbreak in West Africa that has been tasked to devise a strategy to combat the epidemic that broke out early this year in Guinea and left over 100 people dead.

Oketta says Uganda’s inclusion was due to the country’s rapid response to combat a similar outbreak in Northern Uganda in 2000.

He says the focus will be on how countries can curb the spread of the disease to Ebola-free countries.

Last month, the government announced heightened surveillance measures along Uganda’s border with DR Congo after it was confirmed that the neighboring country had suffered an Ebola outbreak.
