Uganda has indicated that it could support Kenya’s nominee for the African Union Chair, Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed.

This comes as some East African Community member states remain undecided on who to front as candidate to vie for the position of chairman of the Africa Union Commission.

The nomination process was opened afresh after the AU Heads of State Summit in Kigali Rwanda failed to choose a successor to South Africa’s Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma who has been chairperson since 2012.

At the Kigali summit none of the three candidates including Uganda’s former Vice President Dr. Specioza Wandira Kazibwe obtained the required 2 thirds majority after seven rounds of voting.

Now speaking to KFM, Ambassador James Mugume the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Uganda failed to field a candidate to beat the 30th September deadline, so the only option is to support the two East African candidates in the race.

He says Uganda is yet to decide on whom to support, but will definitely back the candidate the region chooses between Kenya’s Amina Mohamed and Somalia’s Fowsiyo Yusuf Haji Adan.

Rwanda has already thrown its weight behind Kenya’s candidate who according to the foreign affairs minister Louise Mushikiwabo is the best woman for the job.
