Ugandan sugar manufacturers are grappling with about 50,000 metric tons of unsold sugar due to the feud between Uganda and Kenya.

The Kenya Sugar Board continues to block Sugar imports, accusing Uganda and Tanzania of simply re-packaging cheap sugar from the Comesa trading bloc for resale in other East African markets.

A recent meeting of the region’s sugar regulators and tax agencies resolved to fully liberalise sugar trade among EAC states but according to Jim Kabewo, the Director Madhivani Group, this is far from being achieved.

Kabeho is calling for government’s intervention to prevent Sugar prices from further reducing.

Currently a kilogram goes for as low as Sh 2000 compared to Sh3, 500 early this year.
