The UPDF has refuted reports of an attack on their AMISOM base in Somalia.

There have been reports that Al-Shabab militants have overrun an African Union military base in southern Somalia, inflicting heavy casualties.

The militants said they have killed seventy AU soldiers at the Janaale base, 90km south-east of the capital.

According to the BBC, residents said the attack started with a suicide car bombing at the base’s gate, followed by sustained gunfire which lasted more than an hour.

However, speaking to KFM, the Ugandan military AMISOM spokesperson, Capt Isaac Oware insists that the AU forces insisted they are still in control of the base.

Oware explains that while it’s true the militants attacked the base at Janaale 140km South West of the capital Mogadishu this morning, they were effectively repulsed by the AU forces.

Al-Shabab, part of Al-Qaeda, is battling the AU-backed government for control of Somalia.
