Uganda Prisons Spokesperson Mr Frank Baine has dismissed reports on social media that the Kitalya prison facility is a torture-detention center for political prisoners.

Addressing journalists in Kampala, Baine revealed that a one Lumbuye and group on social media are targeting to tarnish security agencies’ reputation including Prisons by naming them torture chambers.

He says Uganda prisons runs an open door policy and members of the public are free to visit.

“Members of parliament recently visited, they even talked to the inmates. So it is very surprising that somebody is calling Kitalya a torture chamber. Unfortunately for us we don’t have political prisoners, all who we have are those who have defaulted on the penal code act” says Mr Baine.

Relatedly in a tweet, the opposition National Unity Platform party leader Robert Kyagulanyi recently noted that the conditions at Kitalya where party supporters like Nubian Li and Eddy Mutwe are detained are dire.

“The conditions at Kitalya where Nubian Li and hundreds of comrades are detained for no crime whatsoever, are dire. They’ve complained of being denied basic rights, a healthcare crisis, an acute water shortage, and other humiliating conditions.” Read one his (Kyagulanyi’s) recent tweets.
