Police confirmed Wednesday that at least 10 people had died and 33 others seriously injured after a grisly accident involving five vehicles along Fort Portal-Kasese highway on Tuesday night.

The 9pm accident occurred at Kihogo along Hima–Rugendabara road, according to eye witness accounts. The section of the highway is still under re-construction.

The accident involved five cars including a Canta truck carrying a coffin and mourners from Bundibugyo District that were headed to Maliba sub county for burial.

It is reported that the truck rammed into a Noah car which was also rammed into by two other lorries that were en route from Fort Portal city before another vehicle from Kasese crashed into the four.

The Red cross spokesperson Irene Nakasita tells Kfm that as of last night, 10 bodies had been recovered from the car crash scene.

She says five survivors were rescued and are currently nursing wounds at Kilembe hospital.

Editor’s note: This story was updated on February 4, 2021 to reflect police clarification on the number of casualties.
