Government has cancelled study loans for 47 University students who lied about the death of their parents to benefit from the student loan scheme.

The 47 students are among the 1,113 beneficiaries of the 2020/2021 academic years study loans.

According to the Higher Education Students Financing Board, which is the authority in charge of the loan scheme, the affected students lied about disability while others faked orphanage by declaring either both parents or a single parent dead.

The board usually gives priority to students with Disabilities, orphans, females and students from Northern Uganda.

The Board’s Communication Manager, Bob Nuwagira says 32 out of the 47 students falsely declared their parents dead, 10 faked disabilities while others falsified documents.

The board has now ordered that the affected students should refund the public funds while other students will now have to privately sponsor themselves for the second semester of their year one of study.

Majority of the affected students were pursuing Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, pharmacy and engineering courses.
