Police in Jinja are holding five FDC supporters for allegedly attacking a relative of the NRM candidate Nathan Igeme Nabeta at Kilembe.
The group accuses the NRM camp of ferrying voters from different places to take part in today’s voting exercise, a claim they have vehemently denied.
Forum for Democratic Change Vice President Eastern Region Salam Musumba and Chief party mobiliser Mugisha Muntu are at the Jinja Central police station where the suspects are currently being held.
Musumba denies all the allegations and insists that the FDC supporters whose identities are yet to be revealed have been arrested illegally.
The Jinja District Police Commander Jonathan Musinguzi has confirmed the arrests but declined to give details on the nature of charges to be preferred against the group.
Meanwhile voting in the Jinja Municipality East bi-election continues smoothly at most polling centers and two of the five candidates have already cast their votes.
FDC ‘s Paul Mwiru cast his ballot from Walukuba West polling station while the NRM’s Nathan Igeme Nabeta has voted from Main street Primary School polling station.
The other three candidates in the race are yet to cast their votes.
They include DP’s Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, UPC’s Riche Osinde Oyo and independent Cranima Dhikusooka.
Meanwhile the Electoral Commission Chairman Dr Badru Kigundu is leading the team of EC officials in Jinja and has assured the electorate that all is well and they expect to announce results without delay.
The parliamentary seat fell vacant after court nullified the election of NRM’s Nathan Igeme Nabeta over alleged voter bribery and inadequate academic qualifications.
