Police have noted with concern the increased cases of road accidents. Latest figures show that at least 79 people have died in road crashes during the first week of 2023 from January 1 to 8.

Addressing journalists at the police headquarters, the traffic police spokesperson, Faridah Nampiima said a total of 340 accidents were registered in the same period out of which 175 people were critically injured.

Nampiima has attributed the cause of the accidents to reckless driving, among other causes.

Meanwhile, over 9,500 motorists were apprehended in the same period for breaking traffic rules. Out of these, 507 were found guilty of overspeeding, 602 lacked seat belts while over 850 did not have driving licenses.
