NDA Toughens On Sale Of Expired Drugs

The National Drugs Authority is set to ban all pharmacies in Uganda that do not have certificates showing drugs incinerated in a space of one year.
The move comes at the time when the authority is battling with the vice of selling expired drugs that has persisted in Uganda.
Speaking to kfm, the chairman National Drugs Authority Dr. Mederd Bitekyerezo said that under normal circumstances, at least 5% of stocked drug must expire in a year but no pharmacy has incinerated such drugs over the past several years.
He adds that it’s evident that these drugs are again re-packaged and sold, thus such certificates will help to pressure these pharmacies to incinerate all expired drugs and whoever fails, immediate closure will be the only option.
