Analysts have described the visit by the Russian Foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, as one that may not may not have a significant impact on the Uganda-Russia relations.

Sergey Lavrov, who is on a two-day official visit to Uganda, arrived yesterday as part of his tour of African countries including Ethiopia, Egypt and Congo-Brazzaville ahead of the second Russia –Africa summit scheduled for October-November in Addis-Ababa.

His visit is seen by many as a means for building stronger bilateral ties, but according to international relations expert Julius Lebo, Russia is simply looking for allies at a critical moment.

Lebo also points to the fact that Uganda notably abstained in the UN vote to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in March, saying it was the right thing to do to maintain a friendship built since October 1962 when Diplomatic relations between the Soviet Union and Uganda were first established.
