The legal battle for Dr. Kizza Besigye’s release took a dramatic turn on Wednesday when Judge Singizi Douglas ordered his return to prison due to his ill health.

The judge expressed concern about Besigye’s deteriorating condition, stating that he could not proceed with a sick prisoner who might faint in court.

Besigye, who has been on a hunger strike for days, has reportedly suffered significant health complications, including kidney damage, according to his wife, Winnie Byanyima. His condition has sparked nationwide protests, with supporters demanding his release.

Despite his worsening health, the state has continued to detain Besigye, prompting his lawyers to file for an immediate release order.

The court heard the defense team’s plea for his freedom, with tensions high due to a heavy security presence around the court premises.

Besigye’s legal team argues that his continued incarceration without proper medical care violates his rights, and they are pushing for an urgent court ruling in his favor.

The fate of one of Uganda’s most vocal opposition figures hangs in the balance, as Wednesday’s court session did not yield results.

Dr. Kizza Besigye and his aide, Hajji Obeid Lutale continue to battle national security-related charges.
