There is confusion among travelers after the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority has early this morning announced that the country’s only international airport at Entebbe which was temporarily shut down yesterday is now open.

The closure followed the Wednesday early morning incident in which a RwandAir flight veered off the main runway into the grass area.

“Following the successful removal of the Rwanda Air aircraft from the runway strip, flights in and out of Entebbe International Airport have been cleared to resume,” a tweet from the Authority this morning.

Last night the Aviation reversed its notice to Airmen that the airport was safe for landing and takeoff but later announced a temporary closure of the airport.

“Owing to safety precautions, Entebbe International Airport’s runway 17/35, which was earlier on reopened for operations has been temporarily closed. Arrangements had been put in place for flights to land and take-off with precautions.”

The Aviation Authority first stopped all inbound flights because, in the process of removing Rwandair aircraft from the runway strip, it got stuck closer to the runway which called for a review of the previous clearance.

This morning, the Authority has once again announced the successful removal of the RwandAir aircraft from the runway strip clearing the Airport to resume.

By last night, several passengers were stranded at the Airport and many took to social media to share photos of the situation at the airport.
