The High Court’s Civil Division on Monday dismissed a habeas corpus application filed by Dr. Kizza Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate, and his aide, Hajji Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya.

They had sought release from what they claimed was unlawful detention at Luzira Prison. Judge Douglas Singiza, after initially reserving his ruling, declared the application moot. This was because Besigye and Lutale had since been formally charged with treason in a Nakawa civil court and legally remanded to Luzira. Consequently, the court found their detention now legally justified.

Judge Singiza also addressed criticisms from cartoonists and bloggers who had labeled him a “Nazi judge,” but did not impose any costs on the applicants.
