The Opposition Forum for Democratic Change has withdrawn the party’s Secretary for Mobilization Ingrid Turinawe from the race for the East African Legislative Assembly seat.

The FDC had earlier controversially nominated two candidates- Turinawe and Florence Ibi Ekwau for the elections scheduled on February 28th.

However, without giving any reason, the party president Maj.Gen Mugisha Muntu, has written to the Clerk to Parliament saying they had decided to withdraw Turinawe’s candidature.

The letter dated 22nd February States that the party has withdrawn Turinawe’s candidature and retained Florence Ibi Ekwau.

However speaking to kfm, Ingrid said that she has yet received the later not any communication from the part secretary general.

Parliament’s Director of Communications and Public Affairs Chris Obore, acknowledges receipt of the said letter from Muntu.

He however notes that according to the rules of procedure, if anyone is to pull out of the race, the letter has to be signed by the nominee and the party secretary general. But in this case, the letter is only signed by the party president.

A total of 47 candidates are vying for the Uganda’s 6 slots at the regional paliament.

These include 6 from the ruling NRM party, 2 from the FDC, Uganda People’s Congress and Democratic Party each have one candidate, while the rest are independents.
