The former Vice President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya has been granted bail.

Bukenya appeared before the Anti-Corruption Court this morning where he faces alleged charges of abuse of office, arising from expenditures incurred in preparation for the 2007 Common Wealth Heads of Government Meeting.

He has been granted bail on condition that he pays 50million Shillings cash while his sureties have been asked to sign bonds worth 200 million shillings not cash.

His 6 sureties are all residents of Kakiri.

Bukenya’s lawyer Macdusmand Kabega has however opposed a proposal by the prosecution requiring him to deposit his passport with the Court.

Kabega says Bukenya’s VIP passport expired with his previous assignment as Vice President and that he is yet to acquire another one.

The Prosecutor Sydney Asubo from the IGG’s office told court that investigations into the matter are complete and that a hearing date will be set at the next court sitting.

Grade one magistrate Sarah Langa has adjourned the case until 30th June for mention.

Bukenya who arrived at court a few minutes to 9.00am was escorted by his lawyers Mac Dusmand Kabega and Enos Tumusiime.

Earlier, all photographers and camera persons were chased from the court room, as Bukenya threatened to storm out, protesting against the endless shots.

The Court officials directed all photographers and cameramen to wait outside the court room.

Bukenya’s troubles arise from the procurement of vehicles and motor cycles which were used during the meeting in which government is said to have lost 6 billion Shillings.

He is accused of ordering direct procurement of BMW cars from Motor Care Uganda Limited in an alleged hijack of the procurement process by stopping international bidding.
