Government has asked the World Bank to extend the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) project for one year. The 360 million US dollar project is meant to close on December 31, 2023.

The revelation was made by Lands Minister Judith Nabakooba, while appearing before Parliament’s Physical Infrastructure Committee which is assessing the progress of the project that started on April 11, 2019.

Her plea comes despite complaints over delayed completion of the road projects that were meant to take just one year.

She said the request for the one-year extension was guided by the recommendation of the program mid-term review which observed that there was lost time of 12 months as a result of the delayed commencement of the program due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The project is being implemented in the districts of; Arua, Gulu, Lira, Soroti, Mbale, Jinja, Masaka, Fort Portal and Hoima. Entebbe, Tororo, Kabale, Kitgum, Kasese, Kamuli, Apac, Ntungamo, and Busia among others.
