The case filed by the Uganda Medical Workers Union against the striking doctors for engaging in what they call illegal industrial action is expected to come up today for hearing.

The case is before the High Court Deputy Registrar in charge of civil matters Sarah Langa.

On November 15th, the union sued the president of the Uganda Medical Association Dr. Ekwaru Obuku and Workers’ MP Dr.Sam Lyomoki demanding for damages resulting from announcing a strike without following the prescribed legal procedures.

In the suit, the Uganda Medical Workers Union, the National Organisation of Trade unions and the Uganda Nurses and Midwives claim they are the only organisations mandated to hold negotiations on behalf of health workers and government.

The Union thus wants all the on-going negotiations between government, the Uganda Medical Association to be declared null and void and instead order government to hold such negotiations with the legally mandated bodies.
