The Nakawa High Court has temporarily halted the eviction of railway squatters by Kampala Capital City Authority.

The order issued by the acting registrar Flavia Nassuna runs from today until August 4th when the hearing of the petition filed by the alleged encroachers will commence.

The order was issued after a team of lawyers led by Caleb Alaka asked court for an injunction citing rules of natural justice which calls for a hearing.

This comes a day after the KCCA demolished structures situated along the railway reserve land in areas of Namuwongo, Ndeeba, Banda and Nalukolongo among others.

The city authority has come under fire over the eviction with some critics demanding that the evicted families be compensated.

However, according to KCCA executive director, Jenniffer Musisi, compensation is not part of their mandate.

Meanwhile, one of the affected residents, 65 year old John Mwesigwa, a cobbler at Sink one zone in Ndeeba Parish has a lot more to cry for following yesterday’s demolition exercise.

He says his wife and three children have gone missing since last night when the demolitions started.

Elsewhere hundreds of traders who had their markets destroyed have displayed their commodities on the railway line insisting that they have nowhere else to go.
