Hundreds of mourners have gathered in Nyamitranga for the send-off of the Archbishop Emeritus of Mbarara Archdiocese Paul Bakyenga slated for this afternoon.

A requiem mass is currently underway at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Nyamitanga Cathedral in Mbrara City.

Bakyenga passed on at Nsambya hospital on Tuesday last week at the age of 79.

Another requiem was held for him on Friday last week at Rubaga Cathedral in Kampala.

Bakyenga has been praised for his immense contribution to the development of the church and state.

He is particularly lauded for founding educational institutions such as the University of St Joseph in Mbarara and health facilities such as Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital.

He is to be buried inside Nyamitanga Cathedral in Mbarara, becoming the second Bishop to be buried there after Father Francis-Xavier Lacoursiere of the White Fathers.

Meanwhile, the government has accorded the late prelate an official burial
