Jamwa bail ruling for tomorrow

The state has opposed the bail application filed by former NSSF MD David Jamwa, saying his chances of absconding are very high.

Jamwa filed an application with the Court of Appeal seeking to be released, pending determination of the appeal challenging his conviction and sentence.

Jamwa was sentenced to 12 years in jail after court convicted him on charges of abuse of office and causing financial loss of 3 billion Shillings.

In his application, Jamwa says he suffers from high blood pressure and needs special care which he can not access while in prison.

The state attorney Ssenoga Mawano however says it’s risky to grant Jamwa bail now, when he is already serving a long term prison sentence and has asked court to dismiss the application.

Jamwa has presented 5 sureties before the court including his mother Tezra Jamwa, his father in-law John Bulinda, two uncles and a friend.

His lawyer David Mpanga says he is willing to submit his passport before the court, making it impossible to travel outside the country.

He is also ready to submit his title for land comprised at Block 255, Plot 834 Munyonyo as security.

Justice Augustine Nshimye says the ruling on the matter will be delivered tommorrow.

Jamwa is accused of selling government bonds to Crane Bank before their maturity date and at a lower price, leading to the said losses.
