He was declared at around mid-day having polled 26029 votes accounting for 56.9 % of the total votes cast.

Incumbent Maj. Gen. KahindaOtafiire came second with 17269 votes, which accounts for 37.7% of the total votes cast.

Otafire has been the area MP since 1996.

Anxiety and pressure from supporters of Capt. Kahonda forced the District Registrar Elisha Kahaika to declare the winner even before all the results had not been tallied.

Capt. Kahonda’s supporters then burst into wild cheers after he was declared.

Speaking after the declaration, Capt. Kahonda said the victory belongs to the people of Ruhinda who have worked hard for it.
