Kalungi appearing before court yesterday

In a rather dramatic turn of events, Suleiman Adam Kalungi, the key suspect in the death of Butaleja Woman MP Cerinah Nebanda has changed his plea on charges of man slaughter and denied the offence.

He had pleaded guilty to the charges yesterday but the Makindye Chief Magistrate Esther Nambayo rejected his guilt plea because he did not have lawyer to advise him on the consequences.

Kalungi appeared at court this morning with three private lawyers; Geoffrey Kandeebe Ntabirweki, Dancun Ondimu and Renato Kania.

He is also charged with unlawful possession of narcotic drugs and supplying and dispensing illicit drugs.

The State Attorney Samali Wakoli has told court that investigations still continue prompting the Chief magistrate to adjourn the case to January 15th when Kalungi’s co accused will return to court.

Meanwhile, Kalungi’s lawyers led by Kandeebe say they are processing his bail application because all the charges he faces are bailable.

Manslaughter is a capital offence that carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
