La Liga games could be postponed this weekend because of the extreme hot weather currently afflicting Europe, according to Spanish Football League (LFP) president Javier Tebas.

Temperatures in the Iberian peninsula have surpassed 40C due to a late summer heatwave, leaving games – especially those planned for mid-afternoon, including Celta Vigo vs Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid vs Osasuna, under threat.

‘If the temperature [at the weekend] reaches 40 degrees we could postpone some La Liga games,’ Tebas told radio Cope.

‘You cannot play a game of football with temperatures of 36, 37 or 38 degrees.

‘We have discussed the heat issue, not just because of this weekend but because of the previous rounds. Real Madrid played their last game against Celta [on Aug. 27] with a temperature of 32 degrees.’

Tebas said the league would also consider delaying some games, although high temperatures have been reported well into the night recently.

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-30Cs throughout the weekend across much of Spain.

Tebas said referees have been advised to allowed players to take as many drink breaks as possible so they can stay hydrated.
