Lawyers representing veteran politician Dr. Kizza Besigye on Wednesday petitioned the High Court for the unconditional release of their client and his political aide, Hajji Obeid Lutale, from Luzira Prison.

This follows a Supreme Court ruling that the Court Martial lacks jurisdiction over civilians, effectively nullifying the charges against Besigye and Lutale.

Through their lawyers, including Martha Karua and Erias Lukwago, Besigye and Lutale are seeking a court order compelling the Attorney General and the Commissioner General of Prisons to explain why they have not been released despite the Supreme Court’s ruling.

“We have filed an application for habeas corpus before the High Court Civil Division seeking for court to direct the Attorney General and the Commissioner of Prisons to bring dead or alive Dr Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale before the High Court,” Counsel Ibrahim Ssekanjako, one of the lawyers representing Besigye told KFM on Wednesday.

The court has yet to schedule a hearing for the application.

Besigye is represented by Ibrahim Ssekanjako of Lukwago and Company Advocates.
