Liberian president pardons Ugandan drug trafficker

Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has pardoned a Uganda woman sentenced to four years in jail for trafficking illicit drugs into Liberia.

Interpol Director Asan Kasingye says if deported she will not have any action taken against her, but she will be closed watched.

According to Liberian media, President Johnson-Sirleaf made the order for the immediate release of 50 prisoners including Shirat Nalwadda.

26 year old Nalwadda was arrested in December 2013 with 2.5 kilograms of heroin at the airport.

Throughout the trial, she insisted that she was tricked by her Nigerian boyfriend into carrying a luggage that contained contrabands.

Several Ugandans have been arrested abroad over drug trafficking.

In May last year, Chinese authorities executed two Ugandans Omar Ddamulira and Ham Andrew Ngobi convicted of trafficking narcotics.

By June 2012, Uganda’s embassy in China had compiled a list of 23 Ugandans who had been sent on death row in China over drug trafficking while another 22 were serving life in jail over similar offences.
