The elected leaders of Kampala led by the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago are to petition of the speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga over yesterday’s eviction of traders and demolition of stalls at the Nakivubo Park Yard Market.

Yesterday morning unknown persons backed by police razed down the market on the directive of Kampala minister Betty Kamya who had given them 30 days to vacate and allow room for redevelopment of the area. The minister argued that the market did not meet basic planning requirements and that KCCA would not gazette it because it is illegal.

Now according to Lukwago, this is a matter which needs parliament’s intervention, adding that they have already secured an appointment with the speaker and are set to deliberate on the matter on  Wednesday .

He said that the ongoing trend of redevelopment in the city is not sustainable and the only option they have is to engage the speaker.

Over 15,000 traders were operating from the market with many working there for the last 30 years.
