The Ministry of Education has asked Makerere University Council to ensure that the university is open within two weeks.

Yesterday, the university was closed indefinitely after management failed to meet the 100% pay rise demands by lecturers.

Education Minister Jessica Alupo says the university council should take the necessary steps to ensure that the willing lecturers resume work.

She says the government supports the decision to close the university since the 100% increment is not affordable in the short term.

The striking lecturers under the Makerere University Academic Staff Association have vowed not to resume work until their demands are fully met.
