Census is here

Kampala has registered the highest dropout rate of census enumerators.

According to the coordinator national housing and population census Paul Mungyereza, more than one hundred enumerators disappeared on day one.

He says the major reasons cited are late payments while others could not walk long distances.

However, Mungyereza says 80 special enumerators have been recruited to ensure that exercise does not stall.

According to a report by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, the exercise has greatly been affected by the ongoing rains in different areas like Amuria and Karamoja where floods have limited the enumerators’ movement.

In Wakiso district, some of the people residing in railway reserves areas of Kasokoso village are still hesitant to participate in the ongoing census exercise.

Kira town council mayor Mamerito Mugerwa says some residents fear that the information gathered may be used to evicting them from their land.

Mugerwa says most of the residents have abandoned their homes during day time, making it hard for the enumerators to account them
