More teachers lack competence- UNEB report

Majority of teachers in upper primary and lower secondary lack competences in subjects they teach,
This is according to a Uganda National Examinations Board report released in Kampala on Wednesday.
Amos Opaman, a UNEB official said teachers have inadequate knowledge of Mathematical, Biology and English language concepts and lack the ability to assess the learners.
He noted that although over 72% of the pupils could count in Primary Three, this declined as they progressed to Primary Six where only 39% of those surveyed could count.
The report recommends that government increases the number of years teacher trainees spend in the institutions.
Wilber Wanyama, a Ministry of Education principal education officer in the Primary teacher education department says government is reviewing the primary teaching curriculum.
