Mubende Ebola survivors decry stigma

Ebola survivors who were recently discharged from Mubende regional referral hospital after testing negative for Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) have cried out to health officials over stigmatisation and discrimination by the community.
Alex Ssebayiga a boda boda rider in Kisawula village in Madudu sub-county, the epicenter of the outbreak, says he contracted the disease from an 8-year-old child he carried together with the mother, both of whom later succumbed to the disease.
He narrates his ordeal to KFM saying he and 7 others who came in contact with the deceased contracted Ebola and are currently receiving treatment at Mubende hospital.
Ssebayiga adds that while in the Ebola treatment unit, he noticed that most patients seemed to run mad before they died, a situation he blames on stigma.
Ssebayiga says that although he was discharged and is now free from Ebola, the community continues to stigmatize and discriminate against him, adding that he cannot buy anything from the shops in his village.
