By Damali Mukhaye.

Students of Makerere University have vowed not to turn up for today’s local council elections after the electoral commission declined to postpone it.

The students had asked the commission to postpone the exercise to August when they return from holidays to start the new academic year.

The chairperson of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change Makerere Chapter Edmon Mugabe says since all the students are currently away, no one will turn up to elect the LC1s in halls of residence.

He says the lecturers can go ahead and elect their leaders since they are the only ones on campus.

According to the electoral commission, today’s exercise will commence at 11am and last 30 minutes across the country.
