David Kugonza | April 25, 2017

Today the 14 suspects alleged to have masterminded the murders of two Muslim clerics have opted to remain silent and let court proceed to write the final verdict basing on the evidence and exhibits already on court record.

The suspects including the leader of the Tabliq sect in the country Shiekh Younus Kamoga have today appeared before the International Crimes Division of the High court for their defence.

However through their respective lawyers; Fred  Muwema and Macdusman Kabega , the suspects informed the judges  that they have chosen to exercise their Constitutional right to remain silent.

After ordering the accused to defend themselves on the 13th/April 2017 , lead  judge Ezekiel Muhanguzi informed them that they had  three options to choose from;  one being giving a sworn evidence where prosecution cross-examines them,  giving a unsworn defence or  keeping  quiet. they have chosen the latter.

The three presiding judges Ezekiel Muhanguzi, Percy Tuhaise and Jane Kiggundu unanimously ruled that prosecution had made out a case against each of the 14 men that warrants them to make a   defence on charges of murdering fellow sheikhs; Mustafa Bahiga and Hassan Kirya, Terrorism and the attempted murder of Shiekh Haruna Jjemba.

The case has now been adjourned to the 26th/May 2017 for both prosecution and defence to address court on their final written submissions.
