Anglican Bishops are set to elect a new Archbishop of the Church of Uganda to succeed His grace Stanley Ntagali.

The election is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 28th August 2019, next week following the announcement of the Most Rev. Stanley Ntagali’s retirement in 2020.

According to a communiqué from the Provincial Office of the Church of Uganda, the new Archbishop who will be the 9th Archbishop of Church of Uganda since 1961 will be elected by the House of Bishops consisting of all active Diocesan and Assistant Bishops.

Currently, there are 38 Bishops in the House of Bishops and only 33 are eligible to become Archbishop.

The Most Rev. Stanley Ntagali was elected Archbishop by the House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda on 22nd June 2012 and was enthroned as Archbishop on 16th December 2012 in St. Paul’s Cathedral, Namirembe, Kampala.

The Constitution of the Church of Uganda, stipulates that an Archbishop can serve only for ten years and upon clocking 65 years must retire, even if he has served less than his ten-year term.
