Parliament halts business over unresolved Wakiso murders

Aruu South Member of Parliament Hon.Odonga Otto has dramatically moved the House to halt business until government explains the mysterious killing of women in parts of Wakiso district.

This was after members raised concerns about the absence of the minister of internal affairs and his security counterpart in the House, at a time the country expects explanations about the killings.

So far, 20 women have been killed in separate attacks in Entebbe and Nansana, with the latest incident reported in Nyanama, Rubaga Division yesterday.

According to Odonga Otto, the situation is running out of hand and the country deserves a thorough explanation.

The motion was supported by Wakiso Woman Member of Parliament Hon.Rosemary Seninde, who doubles as the Minister of State for Primary Education has supported the motion.

Earlier, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Winnie Kiiza lashed out at cabinet for disregarding the security of women in the country.

Hon.Kiiza has particularly regretted failure by the minister of internal affairs Gen Jeje Odong and his security counterpart Henry Tumukunde to present to parliament, a joint statement pertaining the mysterious murder of women in parts of Wakiso district.

However, the minister of Local Government Tom Butiime has told the House that cabinet would not wish to divulge information, on a matter still under investigation by the police.

Relatedly, police in Kampala have arrested the prime suspect in the alleged murder of a woman whose body was yesterday found dumped in Nyanama Wakiso district.

The Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson Emilian Kayima, has identified the suspect as 26 year old Charles Kato and is reported to have killed his wife Maria Nabirawa, a resident of Mutugga.

This comes as the opposition Democratic Party asks the police Chief Gen Kale Kayihura to step down if his force cannot produce a comprehensive report on the scores of women that have murdered in Wakiso district and other parts of the country.

Addressing journalists at the party headquarters this morning, the acting Secretary General Gerald Siranda said these murders are an indication that the police force has failed to protect civilians under Gen Kayihura’s watch.
