Following an uproar from stakeholders, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has tentatively postponed the implementation of new tariff changes to give room for consultations.

In February, KPA proposed minor tariff amendments with a view of making the port of Mombasa more competitive and user-friendly in light of the prevailing economic conditions.

An April 7 KPA communication issued to the Daily Monitor said: “Management and the Board are currently re-examining the minor amendments of the tariff which were earlier scheduled for implementation by March 15 2014”.

A new implementation date of the proposed tariffs will be announced later.
KPA clarified that contrary to some media reports, the amended tariffs are not yet in force.

“No customer has been subjected to the proposed minor adjustments,” the communication added.

This announcement of the proposed adjustments drew attention from both the business community in Uganda and Kenya, saying they were not consulted
Ms Jennifer Mwijukye, the Managing Director of Unifreight,-a cargo handling and freight-forwarding company, who was earlier startled about the changes when contacted by the Daily Monitor about the postponement welcomed the idea.
