Former Vice President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya is to spend at least one week in jail before his bail application can be heard.

The head of the Anti-corruption court Justice Paul Mugamba has set the 11th October to hear the application.

Bukenya was remanded to Luzira prison yesterday over charges of abuse of office, for his role in the expenditure of 9.4 billion Shillings during the 2007 Common Wealth Heads of Gov’t Meeting.

He is alleged to have flouted procurement procedure in the deal for BMW vehicles supplied by Motor Care Uganda, causing the government a 6 billion shs loss.

Bukenya was remanded to prison after the IGG said investigations into the matter are complete and the case committed to the High Court.

In his application filed before the court, Bukenya says he has substantial sureties that will ensure that he attends trial.

He argues that he is a person of good conduct who would not abscond from court.

Bukenya also says he needs to travel to Nairobi for specialized treatment, though he doesn’t mention the nature of the illness he suffers.
