The Speaker of Parliament has threatened to block the re-appointment of absentee ministers.

Anita Among has vowed that any minister who will be brought before the vetting committee of parliament for approval yet they have not been attending parliament will not be approved.

She made the remarks while opening today’s plenary sitting, further asking the president to consider the attendance of the current ministers before forwarding their names to the vetting committee.

The Speaker also noted that they are going to forward a list of ministers who have been attending parliament to the Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja so she can see how many times each minister has managed to attend plenary.

“I want the President to know the ministers who will be moved from one position to another, that will be the first thing we shall check, did you attend parliament, how many times did you attend parliament that should be one of the basis and I want you to take note of that,” Among said.

She also noted that she is aware there are some ministers who do not want to attend the House sittings when she is presiding the session, urging them to instead focus on serving the people.

“You may not like the presiding officer, for me, it doesn’t concern me, it isn’t my business, but you are here to work for the people. There are those who say I didn’t go because I don’t like the presiding officer, so what? Come & represent your people,” she told legislators on Thursday.
