BY DAMALI MUKHAYE.

Universities have asked government to lift the shutdown on social media if online learning is to be successful.

This comes after the National Council for Higher Education on Wednesday notified the universities and other institutions of higher learning that the government plans to stay the re-opening of schools for all learners for the next three months.

Speaking to KFM, the vice chancellor of Kampala International University Mouhamad Mpeza-mihigo says they are facing a big challenge in coordinating students using social media platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook.

He says that the government should consider reinstating the use of social media if online teaching is to happen.

Meanwhile, the deputy vice chancellor academic affairs at Makerere University prof Umar Kakumba says the Uganda communication commission and the ministry of ICT should ensure that before the online teaching can kick off, social media platforms should be functional.
